I just finished reading Jane Eyre, and it had a similar message. Mr. Rochester and Jane were not ready to come together yet. She had to let go of the idol she made of him and turn back to God, and he had to go through a conversion and find his true love for her. Once they came to that conclusion, they were finally ready to live out their vocation. I thought that was really beautiful.
Too much of fantasy is just trying to build in romance now. If the fate of the world is in the balance I think sensible people can be practical enough to do what is needed first. Throughout the book, The gentle undercurrents between them was enough to pull at the readers and I think that was just spot on!!
I think you see something similar in the love story of Sam and Rosie. Less grandiose, perhaps, because they are only ordinary folk and not a great king and an elven princess, but perhaps that makes it even more beautiful.
I understand they are courtly love and everything but…I like my crazy couples lol. I have nothing to say about Aragorn and Arwen like I doubt they even got into any domestic squabbles
As someone in a long distance relationship (coast to coast) doing a year of volunteer service, I needed to hear this. So grateful for Tolkien’s intentional authorship in their relationship. Beautiful analysis! 💕
One of my favourite passages in the bible says it all - Corinthians 13: 4-7
"Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 5 It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. 6 Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. 7 It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
Erm, not dramatic enough? Must romance be overly dramatic? With drama comes passion, with passion comes lust,with lust one can find oneself losing their soul. There are certainly exceptions, but we must tread lightly.
